چکیده

We evaluated marine aggregates as environmental reservoirs for a thraustochytrid pathogen, Quahog Parasite Unknown (QPX). of the northern quahog or hard clam. Mercenaria mercenaria. Positive results from in si tu hybridization and denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis confirm the presence of QPX in marine aggregates collected from coastal embayments in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, where QPX outbreaks have occurred. In laboratory experiments, aggregates were observed and recorded by entering a quahog's pallial cavity. thereby delivering embedded panicles from the water column to its benthic bivalve host. The occurrence of pathogen-laden aggregates in coastal areas experiencing repeated disease outbreaks suggests a means for the spread and survival of pathogens between epidemics and provides a specific target for environmental monitoring of those pathogens.

EU Regulatory Risk Management of Marine Biotoxins in the Marine Bivalve Mollusc Food-Chain

Food safety risk assessment in the European Union (EU) recognises consumer illness that arises from marine biotoxins as a risk associated with bivalve mollusc consumption. EU food regulations contain various general food safety obligations, which should contribute significantly to managing this risk. EU food regulations additionally impose various specific obligations on both Food Business Oper...

Appearance and spread of diseases among bivalve molluscs in the northern hemisphere in relation to international trade.

Bivalve mollusc culture is a well-developed marine aquaculture activity in many countries around the world, notably in the northern hemisphere. During the development of this activity, numerous countries have been confronted with infectious diseases of varying severity and duration. Research has been conducted to determine the aetiology, epidemiology and control measures for these epizootics. M...

Fractal geometry of marine snow and other biological aggregates

Fractal dimensions of aggregates can potentially be used to classify aggregate morphology as well as to identify coagulation mechanisms. Microbial aggregates of Zoogloeu rumigera have a cluster fractal dimension of 1.8kO.3 (+ SD), suggesting that these aggregates are formed through cluster-cluster coagulation. An analysis of size-porosity correlations for two types of marine snow aggregates yie...

Production of heterotrophic bacteria inhabiting macroscopic organic aggregates (marine snow) from surface waters’

Macroscopic detrital aggregates, known as marine snow, are a ubiquitous and abundant component of the marine pelagic zone. Descriptions of microbial communities occurring at densities 2-5 orders of magnitude higher on these particles than in the surrounding seawater have led to the suggestion that marine snow may be a site of intense heterotrophic activity. We tested this hypothesis using incor...

Marine snow formation in the aftermath of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico

The large marine snow formation event observed in oil-contaminated surface waters of the Gulf of Mexico (GoM) after the Deepwater Horizon accident possibly played a key role in the fate of the surface oil. We characterized the unusually large and mucus-rich marine snow that formed and conducted roller table experiments to investigate their formation mechanisms. Once marine snow lost its buoyanc...
